Fist Thing Now i'm back..... Louis by Louis CK (Episode 2 mostly)

As a equal/gay rights activist I felt the need to talk about this.

Louis

A truly funny, learned comedy, that addresses real current social issues in an emotional grown up way. This scene makes me laugh every time I watch it, but it's not all light hearted. You see with the joy & the laughs that CK and the gang bring to the show, they also make you feel, and force you to think.
This 7 minute opening scene (To Episode 2) takes jabs at being friends with people who have different social, political, religious & practical views to you. It also covers bullying, ageism, sexism and modern language. And even, to an extent, Freedom of speech.

What makes this an honest to god great show isn't so much it's jokes, as it is the brutal realism it thrusts upon us as human beings, while all the time maintaining the ability to make us cackle.
The great stand ups have always made us giggle as well as think, and that is one thing Louis CK applies to the worn out standard sitcom template with unparalleled success.     The show may have aired in 2010, making me very much late to the party, but I feel the message is just as important now as it was 5 years ago.

In short, Watch this, Enjoy this, Support this. But most of all........ Learn from this.

It's been a while.

I know its been awhile since I've posted here but I am working on getting back into it.
Life has gotten in the way over the last year or so, so I've been on hiatus.
But now I'm back in full swing!

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Life moves pretty fast....So take some time to watch this film.

Starring:
Matthew Broderick, Charlie Sheen, Alan Ruck, Ben Stein, Kristy Swanson, Cindy Pickett, Richard Edson, Max Perlich, Del Close, Mia Sara, Jeffrey Jones, Lyman Ward, Louie Anderson, Virginia Capers, Jennifer Grey, Matthew Broderick, Larry 'Flash' Jenkins
Director: John Hughes

Some times there are films that follow you from, not only your childhood and your teens, but well into your adult life too.

This is a superb film that touches on the fun things in life such as bunking off, messing around with friends and just generally taking life by the balls.

But for all it's singing and shenanigans. its also manages to hit the spot on the often sore subject of growing up and moving on. It does all this without over dramatising too much and is at its core a warm funny teen comedy that I would recommend every teen watch at lest once.

Beside watching Matthew Broderick sing and dance to Twist & Shout automatically makes this an all time great.

Ghostbusters (1984)

If you don't love this film you're either Babylonian or dead. SIMPLE!

Starring: Bill Murray,  Dan Aykroyd,  Sigourney Weaver

Director: Ivan Reitman

Take four fully grown men let them act like kids, pretend they're running around catching ghosts. And Bam! You get one of the funniest greatest sicfi films ever! Everything about this film is superb, the Digital FX's, the script, the cast, the acting, the soundtrack. All AAA! There is a bit of dodgy editing, (but we'll let that slide.) Because it's the freaking GHOSTBUSTERS!

I made my 4 year old nephew watch this film a few weeks ago. Now we can't get him off the PlayStation playing the game. And when we do he's watching the TV show or running around calling his mum slimmer, shouting 'WE GOT ONE' (He has since inherited my toys too)

I guess the point I'm trying to make here is, as a fully grown adult I love this film. My little nephew dose too, as I did at he's age. If a film can last nearly 30 years and still have people of all ages crying out for a squeal. Those that made it, made it right.

Red Dwarf X Ep 1

Extra Special Post!!

I know this goes against everything I've done and am going to do, but I felt this was the place to talk about the new Red Dwarf.

Series 10 has just aired and it's safe to say that I'm a BIG fan. I own all the previous series in DVD and watched them on BBC 2 back in the day. Got majorly hyped for BtE a few years ago and am really hyped for X.

This is what I think of it.

Less than 10 minuets ago I was smiling happily as Red D X ep 1 finished.
But although I'm happy I'm not 100% with what I saw.
My first complaint with the new RD is that it feels as though all the characters development over the last 13 years has suddenly disappeared. The Cat is the shadow loving vain douche bag we all fell in love with/ Kryten is there for science/ Tech jokes again, Rimmer is as resentful as ever (and it's the focus of the episode) and Lister is as dumb yet full of new age wisdom as ever.
I'm sorry but references to Kochanski are liked but not loved.

I can't help but feel like this is red dwarf for a new age of fans rather than a continuation for the old,. That's great as long as you're able to take that on the chin as a fan of a TV show that's the same age as you.

It's as good as I-III Red Dwarf and I do like it!

I just hope it doesn't depend on old tricks so much as it grow on them in coming episodes.

Where's holly?

The Thing (1982)

Starring: Kurt Russell,  T.K. Carter,  Richard Dysart
Director: John Carpenter
Certificate: Certificate: 18

Scared the S*** out me when I was 7 and every time since. Even last night.

Every now and again you'll watch a film that just sticks with you for the rest of your life, I tend to find that its horrors and si-fi that do it for me. And along side 'Predator' The Thing by John Carpenter will go with me till the day I die. If I'm still watching it when i'm 90 odd years old it'll probably be the death of me too.

The setting is an Antarctic research station, cut off from the outside world. 12 Americans welcome in a dog being hunted by some crazed Norwegians. Not knowing that the dog is in fact a shape shifting alien that crashed on earth 100 000 years ago.
It's not long before they figure out what has happened and lose trust in each other.

Every last actor in this film, including the dogs, perform superb parts. Not a line out of character or an unconvincing scream.
The set is dark, lonesome, creepy and contains as much character as the films leading roles.
The Fx's are beautifully disgusting and are distorted to a sickening perfection.
The sound track is wonderfully sparse and all of it aids the setting. Ennio Morricone nailed it again.

I really can not say enough good things about this film. Seen as a box office flop and riding a wave of critically mixed reviews. It has found its deserved place in the hearts of many horror fans now.
It's my personal favourite Horror  of all time......

Save for one masterful mix of Comedy/Horror and a indie project that cost a fraction of the price and is responsible for Zombies being a major part of popular culture.

But again these are films for another time.... Can you guess what they are?

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - The Coen Borthers

Starring: Holly Hunter,  Michael Badalucco,  Wayne Duvall
Director: Joel Coen
Certificate: Certificate: 12

Say hello to my little.......... Walther PPK........

Set in the 1930's deep south, this film naturally has an awesome soundtrack and that alone is reason to watch it.

However you'll soon find yourself dragged into a funny, some what bonkers take on 'The Odyssey' by Homer.
Well I say 'take', it references the story more than it retells it.

Its the tale of Everret (Clooney) and his two dimwitted buddies that break free from the chain gang.

Clooney is inspiring here, he plays the part with well with conviction all be it a little over the top in parts.
But it is not his film alone as both, John Turturro & Tim Blake Nelson perform, in parts, better!
The rest of the cast including, John Goodman are all superb.

The setting is great. The sets and costumes all fit the scene wonderfully. Even if there are a few bloopers, which only add to the already shinning charm of the film.

As mentioned before the soundtrack is great, and the Coen brother's do an excellent job mixing it all in to, what is essentially, a feel good, crazy comedy.

It's by no means their best, (My personal favorite is Fargo, Which I'll be talking about later in this list) but it is a wonderful film, and one that kick started my adoration of Joel & Ethan's films.
