Metropolis (1927) [Recommended]

Starring: Rudolph Klein-Rogge, Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel
Director: Fritz Lang
Certificate: Certificate: PG

Clocking in at nearly 2 hours in length, 'I'll never be able to pay attention for that long.' is something you’re going to hear when talking about this B&W, silent film. It may come as a shock to a lot of people when they discover that, Metropolis can and will keep you hooked from start to finish. Infact I thought it ended a bit abruptly, but that's just me.

It's a wonderful sic-fi/action film, with mind blowing sets and special FX (for the time).
The main drive of the story is the relationship between the two classes of people (The workers & the Designers) living within a futuristic city.
Neither seem to want to listen to the other, and a full on riot breaks out. Naturally this is when the hero steps out to try and set aside their differences.
The film tries to be philosophical, and in a sense manages it, but fails to really show any moral to its rather simplistic story.
At the end of the day it’s the matter, not the subjects that really teaches us anything at all. But that’s not to say the makers of this film, didn't succeed in making a master piece, I fully believe they did.

If you’re a Sic-fi fan or fancy trying out your first silent film, I couldn't recommend this film enough. It has good acting, characters that stand out, a solid plot and great special effects. Oh yeah and did I mention it has a hot robot chick!?
